Twelve signs, four elements, one sky. Pick a sign to learn more, or read about elements and modalities below.
Elements & modalities
Every sign is one element plus one modality. Aries, for example, is cardinal fire.
| Modality | Fire | Earth | Air | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries | Capricorn | Libra | Cancer |
| Fixed | Leo | Taurus | Aquarius | Scorpio |
| Mutable | Sagittarius | Virgo | Gemini | Pisces |
Elements
An element is a sign's temperament: what it's made of.
- Fire Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
- Warm, spontaneous and driven. Fire signs bring courage and excitement, and they'd rather act than wait.
- Earth Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
- Patient and dependable. Earth signs build, tend and take care of the details, and trust what they can see and touch.
- Air Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
- Curious and social. Air signs think things through, share what they learn and see more than one point of view.
- Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
- Sensitive and empathetic. Water signs read between the lines, remember how things felt and care for the people around them.
Modalities
A modality is how a sign acts, set by where it falls in its season. Each element has one sign of each.
- Cardinal Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
- The cardinal signs begin each season: Aries at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. Their energy starts things: setting a direction, taking the lead and making the first move.
- Fixed Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
- The fixed signs fall in the middle of each season, when it's at its fullest. Their energy sustains: committing, persisting and seeing things through, even when it might be time to change course.
- Mutable Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces
- The mutable signs close each season as it turns into the next. Their energy adapts: curious, versatile and comfortable with change, though it can scatter its focus.
